June Meeting

On June 12, 2014, Cathy Bagby, board member and volunteer at the Alton Museum of History and Art, presented a program titled, The 1814 Wood River Massacre and the After-Story of the Families Involved.

A committee chaired by the late Charlene Gill of the Alton Museum of History and Art, collected the many stories, combined them together, and added photographs to produce a new book. All proceeds from the sale of the book go to the Alton Museum.

Ms. Bagby told how the Moore, Reagan, and related families came to be in Madison County. She told of the members of the various families in the Moore Settlement near the Wood River. After describing the events that led up to the massacre, Cathy told of the victims of the massacre and the results of the bloody attack. She talked about the known actions of the affected families and even included some un-proven suppositions of their activities.

This presentation was very well attended, very well received, and produced several questions and comments from the audience.

Since the book mentioned above was published, additional information has been uncovered from descendants of the Reagan family. A revised edition of the book is being produced and should be available soon. If you would like a copy of the revised book, contact the Alton Museum of History and Art (2809 College Ave, Alton, IL 62002; 618-462-2763; altonmuseum@gmail.com) or William Wilson (208 North Bertha St, Albers, IL 62215; 618-248-5885 0r 618-830-4433; billwilson1812@frontier.com) for more information.
